Discover Sanbo Gyudon

Sanbo: Akihabara’s Classic Gyudon Shop

Tucked away in the backstreets of Akihabara, Sanbo has been serving hearty gyudon (beef bowls) since 1979.

Over the decades, this humble eatery has quietly witnessed Akihabara’s transformation—from an electronics hub to an otaku mecca, and now an international tourist destination.

Despite its unassuming look, Sanbo has long been cherished by local regulars as a true hidden gem.

The menu couldn’t be simpler: gyudon (regular or large) and a sukiyaki-style beef dish called Osara or Gyusara, which comes with tofu and shirataki noodles.

The flavor is a classic soy-based seasoning with just a touch of sweetness, highlighting the thicker cuts of beef.

Many locals recommend cracking a raw egg on top of the beef bowl for a richer, smoother taste. Service is lightning-fast—your hot gyudon will arrive within minutes.

When visiting, buy a meal ticket first from the vending machine at the entrance (cash only).

The dining space is small, and it often fills up during lunch hours.

Guests are expected to enjoy their meal quietly, in keeping with the shop’s no-frills atmosphere.

Most of the customers are Japanese locals, and you’ll rarely see tourists here.

English is not widely spoken by the staff, so it’s best to keep your order simple.

The shop is ideal for solo diners or small groups of up to four people.

Sanbo is usually closed on Thursdays, though days off may vary.

If you want to taste an unchanged flavor from Japan’s Showa era and experience a truly local side of Akihabara, don’t miss the chance to try gyudon at Sanbo.
